For a couple of years the answer box at the top of every search felt like progress. Now a quieter movement is going the other way, back toward a list of links you read for yourself. The reasons are practical, not nostalgic.
What the answer box changed
Generated summaries promised to save you a click. Often they do. The problem shows up at the edges: a summary that sounds confident while being subtly wrong, a source you cannot easily check, and a page that now loads slower because it waited on a model before showing you anything.
Why index links are coming back
A link respects your judgment. You see who is talking, you weigh the source, and you decide what to trust. That act of reading is not waste, it is how you learn the shape of a topic instead of accepting a single rendered paragraph as the whole truth.
There is also speed. An index lookup is fast because it is just a lookup. When a page does not have to generate prose before it renders, it appears the moment you hit enter. For people who search dozens of times a day, that difference is felt in the body, not just the stopwatch.
The middle ground
This is not a war between links and machines. Many great engines now let you choose, with an optional summary you can ignore. Brave and others do this well, and for plenty of people that balance is exactly right.
